Gospel Colors

Unknown Date

An unknown minister uses paper in three colors- black, white, and red- to remind him of his sinfulness, Christ’s blood, and the complete cleansing salvation brings.

1866

Charles Spurgeon introduces the Gospel Colors to the Metropolitan Tabernacle in a sermon entitled “The Wordless Book.” Sometime after this, yellow is added as a 4th color.

1875

D. L. Moody preaches the Gospel to over 12,000 children using a book with four colored pages- black, red, white, and gold.

1880s

Amy Carmichael takes the Gospel Colors to India. She hangs a flag of black, red, white, and gold from the back of her ox cart as she travels from village to village sharing the Gospel.

1924

The Gospel Colors are used in the Wordless Book published in London. Ruth Overholtzer, of the Child Evangelism Fellowship, finds a copy in a bookstore run by Dr. Harry A. Ironside.

1939

The Child Evangelism Fellowship adds a fifth color- green for Christian growth- and begins to print the Wordless Book with Scriptures and a teaching guide.

2016

The Wordless Book is being used all over the world. Child Evangelism Fellowship sells over 40,000 copies in one year.
